Land Use and Land Cover Remote Sensing for Water Management (2011)

In August 2011, the Remote Sensing Unit and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam organized a workshop on the topic of “remote sensing and land cover”. The course was held from 15th to 19th of August 2011 at GFZ and was addressed to various Central Asian institutions dealing with irrigation agriculture. The thirteen participating scientists came from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
As part of the Foreign Office funded CAWa-project ("Water for Central Asia") the basics of remote sensing were taught and the software ENVI was introduced. The course was held by Dr. Doris Klein and Sylvia Lex. Stephan Duckert (GFZ) and Katy Unger-Shayesteh (GFZ) were responsible for the technical organization in Potsdam.
During the one-week intensive course an introduction to remote sensing was given and various techniques to analyze satellite data using the ENVI software were taught. The course content included in addition to simple, basic exercises a land cover classification of a Central Asian irrigation area, and the mapping as well as the use of GPS (GlobalPositioning System) -recipients. All participants received a certificate at the end.
