Ludwig Lettenmaier addressed this question as part of the MainPro project. At the annual conference of the Society for Ecology (GfÖ), which took place from 1 to 5 September in Würzburg, he presented his exciting findings under the title ‘Roe deer and earthworms in the forest: friends in the sun, foes in the shade’.

At the end of March 2025, a two-week field trip through Mexico took place as part of a major physical geography excursion organised by the Institute of Geography and Geology at JMU in cooperation with the Institute of Geology at UNAM (Mexico).

The comprehensive sampling of soil carbon in the university forest has been successfully completed. Almost 1000 soil samples were taken at a total of 158 representative points in order to create a precise soil carbon balance as part of the REKLINEU sub-project AP5.

The Sommerhausen forest, located near the wildlife park near Sommerhausen, is the focus of an ecological reforestation project that aims to restore forest areas affected by drought damage. This damage results from the hydrologically unfavorable conditions of the sites, which are increasingly affected by periods of drought as a result of climate change. The aim of the project is to optimize site conditions through targeted soil improvement measures and thus strengthen the resilience of the forest to future climatic challenges.

Students learn about the physical geography and soil science of the university forest during a field internship, and Bavarian radio makes a TV report about the special features of the university forest.

The Dresden Land Use Symposium (DFNS), which has been held annually since 2009, is one of the most important specialist conferences in the field of land analysis, land monitoring and sustainable land management and was selected as a training event for an employee of the social geography sub-project due to various thematic interfaces with the ERDF project Main Pro. The aim was to gather knowledge and experience from other projects and from current research in order to be able to take this into account in the Main Pro project.
