Annual meeting of geography department heads from Lower Franco
10/10/2024On October 10, 2024, the annual meeting of geography department heads from Lower Franconia took place at the Armin-Knab-Gymnasium in Kitzingen. The event opened with a lecture by Dr. Daniel Abel on "Climate Change in Lower Franconia" in which he analyzed recent extreme events such as heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall, while also examining possible future developments under various greenhouse gas scenarios.
In addition to the detailed analysis of regional climate events, the focus was on future projections. Dr. Abel explained how extreme weather patterns and other climatic phenomena in the region might evolve. A wide range of case studies, including changes in growing seasons, analog climates of forests and cities, and the spread of vector-borne diseases, illustrated the diverse and widespread consequences of climate change.
While particular attention was given to Lower Franconia and Bavaria, it was emphasized that the observed and predicted developments are not confined to these regions. In fact, the impacts can be extended to other areas in Europe, a point reinforced by the broader contextualization of the examples provided.
With this lecture, the conference provided an informative and thought-provoking opening, offering the attending department heads valuable insights for both teaching and discussion on climate change.
