The Main Valley Project: Ecosystem-based solutions for hazard scenarios in the Franconian Main Valley (MainPro)

Project presentation
The Main Valley Project (Main Pro) is a project funded by the Free State of Bavaria from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), in which ecosystem-based solutions are to be developed for identified hazard scenarios in the Franconian Main Valley in the period 2023-2027. The main aim of the project is to reduce risks to people and the environment in the Franconian Main Valley by developing and implementing green infrastructures. Furthermore, building on the practical concepts to be developed, a basis for future planning decisions is to be created so that the resilience of the natural and cultural landscape in the study area is consequently improved. The research focusses on habitats and landscapes that are influenced by natural and social dynamics. Other topics include, for example, the development of measures to protect natural environmental resources and reduce CO₂ emissions.
The social geography working group (WG) is one of a total of four WGs that aims to analyse the current and future focal points of risk in the settlement and infrastructure areas in the Main Valley, taking into account the overarching project objectives, and to develop future-oriented recommendations for action, with particular consideration of the planning instruments. The study area of the working group includes the districts of Main-Spessart, Würzburg, Kitzingen, Schweinfurt, Haßberge and the independent cities of Würzburg and Schweinfurt, whereby primarily the cities and municipalities within the Main Valley are considered.
